KP1 is the Modernisation Fund’s call for new stand-alone battery storage, with EUR 150 million in total. Most of what is said about it concerns the deadline. The mechanics that decide whether a filing clears get less attention. The binding deadline is not the online upload. It is the feasibility study, which is due at submission.
Step 1: clear the eligibility gates and the two caps
Two eligibility conditions come first. The project needs a minimum of 1 MW of installed power, and an energy-to-power ratio of at least 2:1, so storage energy in MWh must be at least double the power in MW.
Two caps then apply at once, not one traded against the other. Aid intensity is capped at 69,000 EUR per MWh, and total aid is capped at 15 million EUR per enterprise. Whichever cap is reached first governs the award.
Step 2: start the feasibility study now
The feasibility study must be complete at submission, and a proper study takes weeks to produce. That, not the MySMIS2021 upload, is the real long pole. If the study has not started, the effective deadline already sits behind the calendar one.
Step 3: set the requested aid per MWh
Ranking is competitive and mechanical. Filings are ordered by requested aid per MWh, ascending, so the lowest ask ranks first. Funding is awarded down the ranked list until the scheme’s budget is exhausted.
Step 4: submit inside the window
The window opens on 1 September 2026 at 12:00 and closes on 30 October 2026 at 14:00, through MySMIS2021. The closing time is a time of day, not just a date. A live countdown is on the regulatory calendar.
Step 5: line up the grid connection permit
The grid connection permit (ATR) is a common source of confusion. It is required by the first payment claim, not at submission. Not holding it on submission day does not disqualify the file. That changes how a filing can be sequenced.
Once aid is awarded, the storage system has 48 months from the grant date to reach commercial operation.
What this is and is not
None of this is bidding strategy. It is the order in which the requirements bind, which is the part that decides whether a serious project files in time or runs out of runway on the study. What disqualifies a filing outright is covered separately in Four exclusions that void a KP1 filing.
If you were to file, has the feasibility study started yet?
