Four things disqualify a Modernisation Fund KP1 storage filing, and each one bites after the feasibility study is already paid for, not before. The call closes on 30 October 2026 at 14:00, so the screening is worth doing now.
The four exclusions
Co-located storage
A battery paired with an existing generation asset on the same connection point sits outside this stand-alone scheme, whatever its technical merits.
Partnership or grouped structures
Assembling entities to route around the 15 million EUR per-enterprise aid cap does not reduce your exposure. It disqualifies the filing.
Replacement of existing capacity
A new storage asset that substitutes for capacity already commissioned on the same site does not count as new capacity added, which is what the scheme is funding.
Double funding
A project already receiving state aid or EU grant support toward the same eligible costs cannot draw KP1 support on top of it.
Why they are worth screening for deliberately
None of these is an edge case that an experienced applicant would expect to trip on by accident. That is exactly why they are worth screening for in writing, before committing to the feasibility study spend that a filing requires. The study is due at submission and takes weeks, so it is the first large cost. Catching an exclusion after the study is commissioned is an expensive way to learn the scheme’s exclusion list.
The ordering of the requirements, including why the study is the real deadline, is set out in The KP1 submission sequence, in five steps.
A screening checklist
| Question | If the answer is yes |
|---|---|
| Does the battery share a connection point with an existing generation asset? | The project is co-located and falls outside the stand-alone scheme |
| Is the filing built from several entities that together exceed what one enterprise could claim? | It reads as a grouped structure around the per-enterprise cap |
| Does the new asset replace capacity already commissioned on the site? | It is not new capacity added |
| Do any of the eligible costs already receive state aid or an EU grant? | Double funding disqualifies the filing |
These four are the structural exclusions highlighted here. The applicant’s guide contains further conditions that this note does not list, so read it in full alongside any screening.
Has your project been screened against all four, or only the ones that seemed obviously relevant?
